Yeast Radio Recovered

A Previously Lost Episode from February 3, 2005

This is a Yeast Radio epsiode from 21 years ago which was lost until now. I will begin posting this “lost” episodes for paid subscribers, though this first one is free.

From the Yeast Radio Vault: February 3, 2005

In this chaotic, unfiltered 2005 episode, Madge responds in real time to President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address, refusing to watch the speech on television and instead reading the transcript aloud while blasting Birgit Nilsson’s Immolation Scene from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung. Between bites of microwaved Swedish meatballs and technical complaints about GarageBand, Madge delivers a furious, darkly comic takedown of Bush-era policies, including Social Security “reform,” faith-based initiatives, the Iraq War, capital punishment, and HIV/AIDS policy.

The opera’s apocalyptic climax becomes a running metaphor for American politics, with Brunhilde’s fiery self-immolation underscoring what Madge frames as the collapse of democratic ideals. Along the way, there are digressions into podcasting culture, Adam Curry, hard-drive firmware tweaks, TiVo hacking, and the early-2000s tech landscape, all filtered through Madge’s signature blend of rage, satire, and absurd domestic intimacy.

It is raw, historically specific, and unmistakably mid-Bush-era Yeast Radio: political fury, opera, profanity, microwave cuisine, and end-of-the-world imagery, all in one sitting.
